My relationship with artist books has been ongoing for many years, offering me a distinct dimension in which to explore, record, and develop concepts. Sometimes, these books serve as accompaniments to larger bodies of work; other times, they stand alone as independent pieces.
The exhibition Passional was accompanied by an edition of 30 handmade books.
Syrinx delved into hidden messages and indecipherable texts as a means of accessing the subconscious. It drew inspiration from the reflected lines of rushes on water in the Syrinx series from T4-T4 and incorporated notes my acupuncturist made while treating me for an underactive thyroid.
Love is the Only Flower — a small edition of three books —was my contribution to the 2013 international exhibition Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, a response to the bombing of Al Mutanabbi Street, the booksellers’ street in Iraq. The cover design was inspired by Khalil Gibran’s poem: “Love is the only flower that grows and blooms without the aid of the seasons.” Each page contains a flower alongside the name of one of the victims of the bombing.
A Library of Small Events was created during my 2023 residency at Eastern Edge Arts Centre in Newfoundland. The book holds debris collected from the pavement on Prescot Street, where I was staying, preserving traces of small, unnoticed moments.
